Asthedroughtlastedintothefall,thepartgotworseeverymonth.Therubbishpileduporblewacrossthebrowngrass.Soontheonlypeopleintheparkwerebeggarsandotherpeopledownontheirluck.Peoplesaiddrugswerebeingsoldortr adedtherenow.Theparthadgottenscary,andmymothertolduskidsnottogothereanymore.

Thedroughtfinallyendedandthingsseemedtogetbacktonormal,thatis,everythingbutthepark.Ithadgottenintosuchbadshapethatthecityjustletitstaythatway.ThenaboutsixmonthsagoIheardthatthecitywasgoingto“redevelop”certainworn-outareasofthecity.Itturnedoutthatthecityhadplannedtogetr idofthepark,sellthelandandletsomeonebuildrowsofapartmentbuildingsonit.

Thechain-linkfencingandbulldozersdidtheirwork.Nowweliveacrossthestr eetfromsixrowsofapartmentbuilding.Eachofthemisthreeunitshighandstr etchesablockineachdirection.Theneighborhoodhaschangedwithoutthepark.Thestr eetsIusedtoplayinarejammedwithcarsnow.Thingswillneverbethesameagain.SometimesIwonder,though,whatchangesanotherdroughtwouldmakeinthewaythingsaretoday.
